Offroad, remote & wild | April 2024
Your journey begins at Maun airport in Botswana, where Hannu, your Africa up close guide, welcomes you and assists you with all the important things. Your 4x4 rental car with roof top tent and camping equipment is already waiting for you and you will receive a detailed introduction to your car and equipment. Afterwards, you will be taken to your hotel in the small town of Maun, the gateway to the Okavango Delta, and have the rest of the day at your disposal to arrive relaxed in Africa. In the evening we will have dinner together to get in the mood for the adventure.
Your first drive takes you east towards Nata to the Nxai Pan National Park. The size of this national park is about 2,600 km². The Nxai Pan is one of the dried-up salt lakes of the Makgadikgadi Pans. The former Makgadikgadi Lake existed in what is now Botswana in the Kalahari and dried up ages ago. In its place today are the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, which include the Nxai Pan and the Makgadigadi Pan themselves and the Okavango Delta. Here you experience the open wilderness of Africa, vast and wide plains. Here we set up camp for the first time - not fenced in the wilderness. The simple sanitary facilities are built elephant-proof, in case visitors drop by.
Today you go on a Safari & Nature Tour with Hannu on the Nxai Pan. It is a semi-arid desert area with few animals in this hostile environment. The nothingness and vastness, the great open plains of Africa, untouched by man, makes this place so unique and we rejoice at every animal we spot on the horizon.
Your drive continues from the Nxai Pan towards Nata along the further salt pans of the Makgadadigadi Pans. The vast nothingness will leave you speechless and the sporadic animal sightings will be a real highlight. From Nata northwards, the road takes you a short distance along the "Elephant Highway" in the afternoon before you reach your next campsite. Elephant Sands is built around a waterhole that is the lifeline for the elephants of the region. The constant comings and goings of the pachyderms and their fascinating behaviour is sure to grab you and the up-close experience itself is almost impossible to describe.
After breakfast you continue north to Kasane, the gateway to Chobe National Park. Here you will leave your rental car for the day and our transfer will take you across the border into Zimbabwe. The road takes you through the Zambezi National Park to the famous Victoria Falls. Afterwards, you can explore the small town of Victoria Falls and opt for other local activities such as a bungee jump from the Victoria Falls Bridge or a helicopter flight with a view over the waterfalls, which extend over 1.8 km and thus not only form the longest water curtain in the world, but whose gigantic water masses also thunder over 100 metres into the depths - rightly one of the natural wonders of our earth. Dinner is included today together in the village of Victoria Falls.
You wake up at Victoria Falls and have the morning free for further activities before our midday transfer back across the border to Botswana, where Chobe National Park awaits, especially known for its boat safaris and large population of elephants. You will find your campsite close to the Chobe River. In the afternoon you go on a boat safari on the Chobe River and discover the elephants and buffalos in the reeds and enjoy the African sunset over the water on board.
Today the real 4x4 adventure begins as you drive deep into the Chobe National Park. Here you reach the Linyanti region with the Linyanti River of the same name. The river in the north-west of the Chobe is part of the remote Linyanti Swamp, which covers almost 900 square kilometres. It is one of the most attractive areas in the park. It is characterised by a great variety of wildlife and untouched nature. The remoteness of the area makes it such a special adventure spot with a beautiful landscape of untouched grasslands, riverine forests and winding lagoons. Here you spend two days in the wilderness on a 4x4 tour with Hannu and experience the wilderness first hand. We camp again in the wild, in unfenced areas with simple sanitary facilities, provided the elephants have not destroyed the pipes.
The 4x4 adventure continues today as you drive out of the Linyanti region into the Savuti area. Bordering the Okavango Delta to the west and the Chobe National Park to the east, Savuti is one of Africa's most famous big game areas as it is home to one of the largest concentrations of animals in Southern Africa. Savuti is famous for its mysterious and fascinating Savuti Channel. It runs for a distance of 100 kilometres from the Chobe River through a gap in the sand ridge to the Mababe Depression, where it forms a small swamp that has been dry for 18 years. The Savuti area is mainly characterised by bush savannah and mopane forest. The almost desert-like landscape of Savuti with its scorching sun, loose hot sand, animals escaping the heat by huddling in the little shade available and elephants queuing up to get to the water sources offers a wildlife experience you won't soon forget.
Unlike most travellers, today you have the exclusive privilege of approaching the Okavango Delta directly from the wilderness in your 4x4 vehicle. This brings you to the big safari highlight of your trip and the exclusive Okuti Camp in the Okavango Delta. We have left the dust behind and are surrounded by animals. Camp Okuti is a luxurious eco-certified lodge situated in the famous Moremi Game Reserve, which is part of the Okavango Delta. Depending on arrival time, we will have the opportunity to go on a first safari with the lodge team in the afternoon.
You spend a day in the pure safari feeling of the Okavango Delta and soak up the wilderness during the activities and at the lodge. Here at Camp Okuti you will not only spend two days in the unique atmosphere of the Okavango Delta, but also experience activities such as boat safaris, mokoro dugout canoe trips in the reeds of the Delta's channels, walking safaris and classic safari game drives. Staying here in the Okvango Delta is a privilege, as we are the visitors among the wildlife and nature.
We continue through the Okavango Delta to Maun, the start and end of your journey. Here you will spend the final night of your journey at Thamalakane River Lodge, beautifully situated on the river slightly north of Maun. Here you can relax and review your experiences and adventures.
Today your unforgettable Botswana adventure comes to an end. You will go to Maun airport, where you will say goodbye to your fellow travellers and Hannu and check in for your flight home. You will have many unforgettable memories in your luggage!
