Your journey begins at Lilongwe Airport, where your Hannu, your Africa guide, will welcome you and assist you with all important things. Together with your fellow travelers you go to the Kumbali Country Lodge, only 10 minutes from the center of the capital in a beautiful garden area. Here you can arrive relaxed and look forward to the award-winning dinner with ingredients from the hotel's own farm. But before that you explore the capital Lilongwe with your fellow travelers and Hannu.
Today your tour of Malawi begins with a drive south towards Blantyre and the Mulanje massif. It rises steeply from the surrounding Chizardzulu plains and the Mulanje tea-growing region. Mount Mulanje is over 3,000m high and is called the “island in the sky” by the locals, its highest peak, Sapitwa, breaking through the clouds on foggy days.
It's going high, Hannu takes you to Mulanje Mountain today. After a relaxed start, where the hike leads along small streams, waterfalls and wooden bridges, we head towards the clouds. Your goal is the Dziwe Lankhalamba - The Old Man of the Pool. A beautiful waterfall where, according to legend, the ghost of an old man resides and disappears into the water every time someone comes to swim. After returning from your hike, you can relax for the rest of the day in beautiful nature.
The journey continues to the Majete Wildlife Reserve. From Hannu you will learn the fascinating background to one of the greatest successes in animal and species protection. Majete Wildlife Reserve is also one of the few places in Malawi where you can be lucky enough to see the Big 5 all year round. Your safari accommodation is waiting for you at the border in the Shire Valley. In the afternoon, of course, we head straight out into the wilderness on a first safari game drive in an open safari vehicle and ranger.
Today is all about unforgettable safari experiences. Head out into the Majete Wildlife Reserve by land and sea – by safari vehicle and by boat. With Hannu you keep an eye out for the animals of the African wilderness and he brings you closer to the animal world of Africa.
Today the path takes you further to the Zomba Nature Reserve. The Zomba Plateau is part of the Shire Highlands, extending from the southern end of Lake Malombe. Your Zomba Forest Lodge is located south of the reserve and is beautifully integrated into nature.
The Zomba Plateau offers a range of hikes. Hannu decides on site with the group which hike to tackle. The 6-hour route includes Chingwe's Hole, the Potato Path, Williams Waterfall and the highest peak. The view from the top of the plateau across the Phalombe plain to Mulanje is impressive. Enjoy the plateau hike, after which there is nothing more refreshing than standing under Williams Waterfall. You can swim (or paddle) to the waterfall and enjoy the invigorating cold.
To the south, Lake Malawi merges with Lake Malombe before the Shire River flows through Liwonde National Park. Mvuu Camp on the banks of the Shire River is your next stop and a haven for Malawi's wildlife. Here you will spend two days with Hannu on unforgettable safaris.
Your safari activities today range from classic safari game drives to bush walking safaris and boat safaris. Your guide Hannu and the team at your lodge will bring you closer to the wilderness and wildlife in many ways. From the numerous crocodiles and hippos on the banks of the river to the large herds of elephant, antelope and the newly introduced black rhino, cheetah and lion, you will experience the animals of the African wilderness up close.
The crowning glory of your trip is Lake Malawi - namely Cape Maclear, a tongue of land that extends into the lake. Here is Mumbo Island and your accommodation. The small lodge, my last insider tip on this trip, consists of eco-chalets made of wood, thatch and canvas with shaded terraces, hammocks and a water sports pavillon. It is perched on high cliffs overlooking the water and has a real Robinson Crusoe atmosphere with rustic charm. From the numerous crocodiles and hippos on the banks of the river to the large herds of elephant, antelope and the newly introduced black rhino, cheetah and lion, you will experience the animals of the African wilderness up close.
Today you can relax at Lake Malawi and review the highlights of the trip with your fellow travelers. You can also choose from the non-motorized water sports offered by your accommodation (already included): kayaking, snorkeling, paddle boarding and of course swimming in Lake Malawi or a trip to Chembe Village.
At the end of the trip you will return with your group and Hannu to the capital Lilongwe and the Kumbali Country Lodge you already know by pre-arranged transfer. Here you and your fellow travelers enjoy the big farewell dinner with Hannu.
Today your unforgettable Malawi tour ends and you return to Lilongwe Airport in time for your return flight. This is where you check in: lots of unforgettable memories in your luggage.
